The History of Sendai Ikuei Gakuen goes back to the beginning of the 20th century. In 1905, Rikichi Katoh from Fukushima prefecture, decided to establish an intensive study school, 'Ikuei Juku', in the Sendai area. This was the start of the now 70,000 alumni strong Sendai Ikuei Gakuen educational institute.

At the time of Sendai Ikuei's founding by Rikichi Katoh in the first half of the 20th century, the world was undergoing unprecedented growth and change. Two world wars occurred, including one resulting in Japan's defeat. During this time of crisis, a stream of hardships -including the destruction of Sendai Ikuei during the second war -created many challenges for the school. The future of Sendai Ikuei as a school became uncertain. Yet, even while these events were occurring, Rikichi Katoh and his students focused on the underlying philosophy of Sendai Ikuei's founding principles or motto. Thus, helping them overcome all obstacles and enabling them to rebuild during peacetime.

' Sincerity, Confidence, Responsibility and Determination' is Sendai Ikuei's motto. Founding Principal Rikichi Katoh saw the future of Japan as contingent on the proper raising of Japan's youth. He believed that the above virtues were essential for producing a model citizen. The Sendai Ikuei motto was therefore adopted and implemented into all facets of Sendai Ikuei's endeavors.
